December 22, 2020
Greetings from the Eastern Shore of Virginia!
As we move into the new year, we wanted to provide an update for the 2021 Summer Camp season and send good wishes to you and your family.
While COVID-19 considerations rapidly change and evolve, we are monitoring these changes. As a result, we do not expect to have our camp procedures solidified or camp registration available until later this winter/early spring. However, please know that we are diligently planning for different scenarios that next summer might bring and plan to adjust as experts provide guidelines to operate camps safely.
To inform our decisions for running a safe summer camp season, we are listening closely to health care professionals and the relevant authorities to ensure we have the most accurate and current information. To develop plans and protocols to inform these decisions, we are working with our state and local health officials, the CDC, the American Camp Association, and the Association of Camp Nursing.
We are committed to running camp only if we can do so responsibly. Vaccines may be available, but at this time, we do not assume our primarily healthy, pediatric, and young adult population will have broad access to a vaccine before June 2021.
Covid and its many restrictions have taken a toll on our children’s education and social-emotional development. The value of being in a camp setting, among friends old and new, is needed more than ever. Participation in space adventure camp helps replenish social connections, restore well-being, and provide fun, hands-on educational out-of-school experiences. We have missed your campers—and we will continue to work towards a plan to operate in summer 2021.
Thank you for your patience as we determine the right approach and navigate the rapidly changing COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty about what 2021 may bring.
We look forward to sharing more about what we foresee the adapted summer camp will look like, its safety procedures, and registration availability as soon as possible.
The Virginia Space Flight Academy team and I wish you and your family a healthy, peaceful season and a promising start to the New Year.
