Seeking Summer Camp Counselors

If you are 18 or older and have a passion for space science, engineering and education, becoming a camp counselor for the Virginia Space Flight Academy might be the perfect summer job for you.

Here’s what you will be signing on for:

Responsible for leading and implementing programs and experiences for campers in a group setting. This includes day and night-time activities. Provide instruction to camp participants in model rocketry, robotics and other camp programs. Manage campers through their field trips and activities and be an active participant with them as they go through the program. Responsible for the safety and general well-being of campers throughout their week-long program. Create a positive, fun-filled environment for campers. “Brain stretching fun” starts with you.


  • Experience with camp programs, youth education, working with children in a related field;
  • Experience with rocketry, robotics, electronics, computer science, or similar science and engineering fields;
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and complete tasks with minimal supervision;
    Must be able to pass a NASA security background check;
  • Current CPR/First Aid training required (training to be provided upon hire, if needed).

General Information

Virginia Space Flight Academy offers six, one-week residential camps over the summer. Age range of campers is 11-16. Counselors are expected to work the entire six-week period of the season, with an additional week of training prior to the camp start-up. The work-day will vary as day and night-time activities are assigned with appropriate rest periods built into the schedule. This position is full-time during the summer season; other work-related activities are discouraged as maximum flexibility is required in determining the weekly schedule for counselors.
